APPLICATION

Applications are completed online. Take your time and follow all directions. Fully answer all questions. Be sure to check the due date. Late applications will not be accepted. Avoid waiting until the last minute because an overloaded server or another technical glitch could result in missing the deadline.

These applications are screened for minimum qualifications; must have a valid driver’s license, be at least 18 yrs of age, have at least 20/30 corrected vision or 20/100 for uncorrected, no felony convictions, and earned a high school diploma or GED.

COGNITIVE/    BEHAVIORAL ASSESSMENT

Complete the entry-level firefighter exam, which measures cognitive ability and behavior orientation.

This assessment is an entry-level Firefighter exam developed and published by Industrial/Organizational Solutions (IOS) Inc., National Firefighter Selection Inventory (NFSI). Study guides are sold by the test publisher and may be purchased from their website iosolutions.com.  Additionally, NFSI study guides are available for reference at the Grand Rapids Public Libraries.

This exam does not require firefighter experience or first-hand knowledge. Instead, it measures abilities and traits important to becoming a successful firefighter, which may include:

  • Reasoning

  • Information Ordering

  • Mathematics

  • Problem Solving

  • Written Comprehension

  • Stress tolerance

  • Team orientation

  • Motivation

  • Attitude

Physical Agility Test

Complete our Physical Agility Test,  used to verify that a candidate is physically qualified to potentially do the job of a firefighter. 

This evaluation is free for those whom are selected to participate in the physical ability portion of the Grand Rapids hiring process. Those holding a valid CPAT card will not be required to test.

ORAL EXAMS & INTERVIEWS

Oral exams consist of online, one way, self recorded video interview.

 

Interviews are completed in a structured, panel format.

Preparation and practice is essential.
